General Education

General Education Program at American International College

The General Education program is an integral part of the learning experience at American International College.  It provides broad knowledge as well as intellectual and personal development, beyond what can be found in any specific discipline or program. This prepares students to be socially responsible critical thinkers who actively contribute to a global society as lifelong learner.

American International College has established six competencies that form the foundation of the learning outcomes in our courses. Upon successful completion of the General Education program, students will be able to demonstrate:

  • Critical thinking
  • Effective communication
  • Ethical reasoning
  • Global self-awareness
  • Information literacy
  • Mathematical and scientific reasoning

 

Degree Requirements

(36 credit hours)

The General Education requirements shown below are valid beginning Fall 2019.

Communication 
(9 credits)
Students take:
ENC 1101 and  ENC 1102 and One Speech

Humanities
(6 credits)
Students take:
Two courses from different groups
At least one course must be from the Core list.  Both courses can be from the Core list.

Social Sciences
(6 credits)
Social Sciences/ Behavioral Sciences
Students take:
Two courses from different groups
At least one course must be from the Core list.  Both courses can be from the Core list.

Sciences
(9 credits)
Biological Sciences/
Physical Sciences
Students take:
One Biological Science and  One Physical Science and   One Laboratory and One Wellness
At least one Biological or Physical Science course must be from the Core list.  Both courses can be from the Core list. **

Mathematics
(6 credits)
Students take:
Two courses
At least one course must be from the Core list.  Both courses can be from the Core list.

 

Additional requirements:
W = Writing credit course.  Students must take ENC 1101; ENC 1102; and two additional writing credit courses (6 credits) to graduate.
I = International/Intercultural Course.  Students must take 3 credits of international/intercultural coursework to graduate.
